Buying Singing Bowls Wholesale from Nepal: MOQ, Lead Times, and What to Ask
Nepal is the world's primary source for hand-hammered seven-metal singing bowls. The market ranges from machine-made tourist-grade bowls at USD 8 wholesale to museum-quality antiques at thousands of dollars. For US and EU wellness, retail, and gift buyers, the relevant segment sits between those extremes -- hand-hammered, acoustically tuned, lead-free, and documentably compliant. Here is how to navigate it.
Quality tiers
The Nepal singing bowl market has three practical quality tiers:
Tier 1: Tourist and promotional grade
Machine-spun or machine-pressed, with minimal handwork. Thin walls, inconsistent tone, often finished with lacquer to hide surface defects. HS classification can be complex (sometimes classified as toys or souvenirs). Not suitable for wellness retail where the acoustic properties matter.
Wholesale price range: USD 4-12 per unit (18 cm equivalent). Often sourced directly from Thamel, Kathmandu's tourist district. Not available through ApexVectura.
Tier 2: Artisan hand-hammered, untuned
Hand-hammered by individual artisans, natural patina, no lacquer. Good acoustic quality but tone is not measured or documented. Suitable for gift and home decor retail where precise tuning is not expected by the end customer. RoHS compliance is less consistently documented at this tier.
Wholesale price range: USD 22-45 per unit (18 cm equivalent). Most Kathmandu metalworking workshops operate at this tier.
Tier 3: Workshop hand-hammered, individually tuned
The tier targeted by ApexVectura: hand-hammered at established multi-generation workshops in Patan, individually tuned and confirmed with a digital tone meter, with documented tuning readings per unit. Lead-free alloy specification, RoHS compliant, REACH SVHC screened. This is the tier that US and EU wellness retailers, sound therapy practitioners, and high-end gift buyers require.
Wholesale price range: USD 44-98 per unit depending on size. The ApexVectura range covers 15 cm (SB-620-A) through 21 cm (SB-820-A).
MOQ and pricing
For Tier 3 workshops, typical MOQs are:
- 15 cm bowls: 50 units minimum
- 18 cm bowls: 50 units minimum
- 21 cm bowls: 30 units minimum
MOQ exists because tuning and quality control is done per-batch, and small batches are not economically viable at the workshop level. Orders below the stated MOQ are sometimes possible at a premium (typically 15-25% above the standard price); ask directly.
Pricing structure: Singing bowls are priced per unit with volume breaks at 50, 100, 250, and 500 units. The FOB Kathmandu price for the SB-720-A (18 cm) runs USD 58-72 per unit across this range. Significant volume discounts kick in above 500 units for established relationships.
Lead times
Standard lead times from PO to FOB Kathmandu:
- 15 cm and 18 cm: 35 days from PO receipt and deposit
- 21 cm: 40 days from PO receipt and deposit
Lead times account for: alloy smelting and sheet rolling, hand-hammering, tuning, quality inspection, and individual packing. For repeat orders where the alloy specification is already confirmed, lead time can reduce to 25-28 days.
Seasonal variation: December-February is the Kathmandu Valley fog season. Ground freight to Kolkata can be delayed by 2-4 days due to reduced visibility on the India-Nepal highway corridor. Add a buffer if your freight is time-sensitive.
Sampling
Most Tier 3 workshops in Patan will supply a pre-production sample (usually 1-3 bowls) against a sample fee that is credited to your first order. Sample lead time is typically 10-14 days.
The sample should come with:
- Individual tuning reading (fundamental frequency and decay time in seconds)
- Alloy specification declaration (lead-free, seven-metal)
- Material test report or alloy composition certificate
Test what matters: When your sample arrives, test the acoustic performance under the conditions it will be used in. Sustained tone, decay consistency, and harmonics are all relevant for wellness buyers. A bowl that sounds good in your office at 70 dB may perform differently in a yoga studio with wall-to-wall carpets.
Questions to ask before placing your first order
Use this checklist when evaluating a Nepal singing bowl supplier:
Compliance
- Do you have a current RoHS Declaration of Conformity for the alloy?
- Has the alloy been REACH SVHC screened? Can you provide the screening report?
- Can you supply a Certificate of Origin (Form A / REX) with the shipment?
Quality
- Is each bowl individually tuned and measured? Can you supply a per-unit tuning record?
- What is your alloy specification -- specifically the lead content?
- What is your defect rate and returns policy?
Logistics
- What is the current lead time and what events could extend it?
- What is the export port -- Kolkata or another ICD?
- Do you have experience with REACH documentation for EU buyers?
Commercial
- What are the MOQ and volume break prices?
- What are your payment terms for a first order?
- Do you have existing EU or US wholesale buyers who can provide references?
